Why does an evaporative cooler need regular maintenance?
In an evaporative cooler, the fan draws outside air through pads that are kept continuously wet; as the water evaporates it absorbs heat from the air, and cool air is supplied to the space. The efficiency of the system depends on air passing freely through the pads and on every part of the pads being wetted evenly.
Over time, minerals in the water build up on the pads as scale, and dust and dirt from the air settle on the pads and in the water tank. Clogged pads reduce airflow and cooling performance, while stagnant water that is not maintained can cause odours and create conditions in which bacteria such as Legionella can grow. Regular cleaning, water management and mechanical checks protect both cooling efficiency and air hygiene.
